New free Shopify tools in 2026: what just launched, and what's actually worth using
Shopify shipped two Editions in 2026 — Winter '26 and Spring '26, 150+ updates each. Genuinely free: Sidekick, included in every plan at no extra cost, and SimGym, free to install but charged per simulation. Checkout UI extensions? Still Plus-only for the checkout steps themselves. Here's which new free Shopify tools 2026 actually delivered, and what to skip.
A note before the list, because this topic is full of bad summaries: nearly every roundup calls all of this "free," and a lot of it isn't. Everything below was checked against Shopify's own Editions pages, Help Center and App Store listings in September 2026 — and where a third-party summary disagreed with Shopify, Shopify won.
What new free Shopify tools launched in 2026?
Six things are worth knowing about. Only two of them are free in the way people mean when they say free:
| Tool or feature | What it does | Free, paid plan, or Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Sidekick | AI assistant in the admin: multi-step tasks, theme edits, custom reports, block generation, voice chat on mobile, and app integrations added in Spring '26 | Free — included in your plan. Shopify's own wording: "Sidekick is included with your Shopify plan. Features and usage limits vary by plan" |
| Shopify SimGym | Simulates buyer behaviour on your theme with AI shoppers — compare two themes, or analyse one live or draft theme | Free to install, charged per simulation run. AI research preview, eligible stores only |
| Checkout UI extensions | Apps that add content to the checkout flow | Split. Thank-you and order-status pages: Basic plan or higher. Information, shipping and payment steps: Shopify Plus only |
| Rollouts | A/B testing and scheduling for themes, extended to checkout configurations in Spring '26 | No plan exclusivity marked — unlike neighbouring features the same page flags "Exclusive to Shopify Plus" or "Exclusive to POS Pro" |
| Analytics upgrades | Heatmaps, bot filtering, the 180-day inventory-history cap removed, precise date and time controls | In the Winter '26 Edition. Single-view multi-store analytics is Plus only |
| B2B in the admin | Company profiles, volume pricing, up to three B2B catalogs | Spring '26 brought these to Basic, Grow and Advanced — Shopify's wording is "at no extra cost" |
Two corrections worth making loudly, because the wrong version is everywhere. Checkout UI extensions did not become free for all paid plans. Apps can customise the thank-you and order-status pages on Basic and up — that part is real — but the information, shipping and payment steps are still Shopify Plus. And SimGym is not a component library. It's an AI-shopper simulator for your theme, closer to a flight simulator for your storefront than to a set of React components.

Which ones are actually worth using?
Ranked for a single owner running the store alone, not for an agency with a roadmap:
- Sidekick — use it today. It's the highest-value thing Shopify gives away, it's on your plan already (which capabilities you get depends on which plan that is), and the 2026 releases moved it from "answers questions" to "does multi-step work": generating theme blocks, writing custom reports, building automations. If you only adopt one thing on this list, this is it.
- SimGym — worth a run before a redesign. Free to install, and the theme-comparison mode gives you a directional read before you ship a change to real traffic. Watch the per-simulation cost, and treat the output as a signal rather than a verdict — it's AI shoppers, not your customers.
- Analytics upgrades — check bot filtering first. Unglamorous and immediately useful. If your traffic numbers have ever looked better than your revenue, filtering bots out changes what you think your conversion rate is.
- Rollouts — only with traffic. Real A/B testing in the admin is genuinely good, but a store doing a few hundred sessions a week will never reach significance. Below that volume, fix known problems instead of testing unknown ones.
- Checkout extensions — read the plan line first. Useful on thank-you and order-status pages. If you were planning a checkout-step redesign on a non-Plus plan, that's still not available.
- B2B in the admin — only if you sell wholesale. Excellent if you do, irrelevant if you don't.
Skipping the rest isn't laziness. Across 300+ updates in two Editions, most are platform depth for merchants at a scale you may not be at yet. The ones above are the ones that pay off at any size.
What can't Shopify's free tools tell you?
Everything on that list helps you build faster — write a section, test a theme, read a cleaner report. None of it tells you why a stranger landed on your store and left without buying. Shopify's analytics show you that conversion dropped; they don't show you that your price is invisible above the fold on a phone, that your only trust signal is in the footer, or that your hero image takes four seconds to paint.
SimGym is the closest Shopify has come, and it's a genuinely interesting product — but it simulates behaviour on a theme change rather than diagnosing the store you have today, and it bills per run. That gap is exactly the one we built for, so treat the next sentence as an ad: full disclosure, EliteVault is our tool.

So what should you actually do this week?
Turn Sidekick on, run bot filtering, and leave the rest until it's clearly relevant to your stage. If you want a wider view of what free diagnostics can and can't do, free website audit tools: what they check compares the categories honestly, and how to reverse-engineer a winning Shopify store is the better use of an afternoon than reading all 300 release notes. New tools are worth adopting; they're just never the reason a store starts converting.
Frequently asked questions
What new free Shopify tools launched in 2026?
Across the Winter '26 and Spring '26 Editions (150+ updates each), the notable ones are the upgraded Sidekick AI assistant, the SimGym AI-shopper theme simulator, Rollouts for A/B testing and scheduling, native analytics upgrades including heatmaps and bot filtering, and B2B features extended to more plans at no extra cost.
Is Shopify Sidekick free?
Yes. Shopify's own answer is that Sidekick is included with your Shopify plan, and that features and usage limits vary by plan. There is no separate subscription for it — but which Sidekick capabilities you get depends on the plan you're already on.
Are checkout UI extensions still Plus-only?
Partly. Apps that customise the thank-you and order-status pages work on Basic plan or higher. Extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps of checkout remain available only to Shopify Plus stores, despite frequent claims otherwise.
Is Shopify SimGym free?
It's free to install, but it charges per simulation run, and it's currently an AI research preview available to eligible stores. It simulates how AI shoppers respond to a theme — comparing two themes or analysing one — rather than being a component library, as some summaries describe it.
Is it worth updating my theme for the 2026 Shopify features?
Only if you have a specific problem it solves. A theme update is a real risk to a converting store, and most of the 2026 releases are platform depth rather than conversion wins. Diagnose what's actually costing you sales first, then decide whether a theme change is the fix.
